Scripture: 1 John 5

Key points to ponder: 1) As children of God we have overcome the world and its evil with Jesus (v. 4). 2) Our lives become testimonies to the truth of Jesus, that we have eternal life in God through Jesus Christ. 3) Whatever we ask for in prayer according to God’s will, He hears us (vv. 14-15). 4) As Christians we will still face sin (v. 16) but Jesus protects us from sin and from the devil (v. 18). 5) Knowing Jesus should lead us to an entirely new way of life.

Challenging terms: Water in verse 6 may refer to Jesus’ baptism and crucifixion (John 19:34). Elsewhere in Scripture water is synonymous with God’s Word (Ephesians 5:26). Blood in verse 6 refers to Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, as well as the Holy Spirit attest to the truth of his identity.

Questions: How has your life as a whole testified to the truth of Jesus’s story? How might your life be a testimony in this time?

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that in you we have overcome the world, that we have eternal life in you!

Consider praying boldly for something that you are assured is in God’s will because it matches up with His Word.
