Scripture: Luke 3

Key Points to Ponder: The prophecy given earlier in this book about John the Baptist comes to pass as John starts to call for repentance (to make a U-turn from evil ways) (v. 3) This baptism of repentance is an act of turning away from the sin and idols which have been controlling us and turning to God as the true source of life and goodness.

Challenging Terms: The quote in verses 4-6 is from Isaiah 40:3-5, and it references barriers being removed and the bringing about of correction and justice. Starting at verse 23 Luke incorporates Jesus’ genealogy to show how he fulfills prophecy. Unlike Matthew, he goes all the way back to the first human, Adam. This may be significant as chapter 4 opens.

Reflection: Why might repentance be a way to prepare for the coming of Jesus? Where is God currently leading you to repent?

Prayer: Father, thank you for loving us enough to ask us to repent from useless things. Help give me the strength to turn from those worthless things to you.
